The Taradale Police Base in Napier is a modern modular facility developed to support frontline policing operations and provide expanded workspace for officers serving the Hawke’s Bay community.

Description

The Taradale Police Base Redevelopment replaces the former Gloucester Street police station, with a larger and more modern operational facility. The new two-storey building has been designed to better support policing operations across Hawke’s Bay and relieve pressure on workspace at nearby Napier and Hastings stations. Constructed using a modular building approach, the facility was assembled on site from 19 prefabricated modules, enabling rapid construction and minimal disruption to the surrounding community. The modules were manufactured off-site and transported to Taradale, where the building structure was assembled in approximately 24 hours.

The completed base will accommodate around 50 police staff working across a range of operational roles. The redevelopment focuses on creating a modern and functional working environment tailored to the operational needs of New Zealand Police. Unlike traditional police stations, the Taradale base is designed primarily as an operational workspace rather than a public front-counter facility.

2PiR Consulting provided fire protection and fire engineering design services for the project, supporting the integration of fire safety systems within the modular building environment. The fire engineering strategy considered system coordination within prefabricated modules, ensuring fire safety infrastructure could be efficiently installed during manufacturing and seamlessly integrated during on-site assembly.

The project demonstrates how modular construction combined with well-coordinated fire engineering design can deliver modern operational facilities quickly while maintaining high standards of safety and building performance.
